Genres of Film

Different media forms are then split into genres. Film for example can be split into horror, comedy, action, western or thriller. Genres have different ‘codes and conventions’ to show the genres clearly. For example, we know a science fiction film when we see one because there are spaceships and aliens, themes of discovery and technology, the future, time travel and robots. The dominant colours are metallic silver and neon blue or green. These codes and conventions are very different to a western where we would expect to see cowboys and saloons, horses, spurs, guns and maybe a cactus. The Narrative or story is also different; different themes and different types of characters too. The codes and conventions show us the type of narrative and genre and this helps us recognise and analyse the form of the text we are studying.

Here is a prezi of all of the popular genres of films:

Conventions of film:

  • Thematic: (INNER form) is an important part of a genre, it is about the themes shown, messages given across to the audience. There are stereotypical character personality in different genres. There are typical storylines for different genres of films.
  • Iconography: (OUTER form) is an important aspect of genre. We expect to see certain objects on screen when we see a particular genre.
To help me grasp all the different genres of films, I decided to look and research closer to a few of the genres to help me decide a certain genre for my coursework.
Science fiction film:
INNER form-
  • themes- of the future, space and planets.
  • there are no clear messages given across through a sci-fi film
  • characters- good vs evil (typical storyline)
  • storyline- fighting against evil or a new unknown species.
OUTER form-
  • typically there are spaceships, aliens and labs
  •  themes of discovery and technology e.g gadgets
  • the future,
  • time travel and robots
  • The dominant colours are metallic silver and neon blue or green to make it look futuristic, abstract and "out of this world".
To see how the "science-fiction" genre could be shown in a short film, I decided to research sci-fi films. In particular I watched the film "Portal" and these are the notes I made after watching it.
INNER form -

  • main characters mission was to escape from the 'prison'.
  • the storyline was good vs. evil.
  • she used a gadget to create a portal which links a futuristic theme.
OUTER form -
  • She was stuck in a grey/metallic coloured room.
  • the portal took her to different places but couldn't let her escape.
  • special effects used with the portal gadget.
Horror film:
INNER form -
  • typical storyline- dark story e.g. friends go on a trip or babysitting.
  • A scary species comes to get someone.
  • usually the target is a woman/ child.
OUTER form -
  • Old houses, creaky floor boards or set in the woods.
  • shaky camera work to add to the fright.
  • involves dolls, clowns, knives and mirrors.
  • villain- white gown, mask, all in black
I watched a short "horror" film to help research for my short film idea. The film was called 'Red Balloon'.
INNER form -
  • The storyline was about a babysitter looking after a young girl who was trying to get asleep. To find out that someone was watching her.
  • the villain was hiding under the girls teddies and in particular a rabbit.
  • The target was the teenage girl (babysitter) and the young girl.
OUTER form -
  • location- the young girls house.
  • there were mirrors and teddies involved.
  • after something scary would happen it would cut to a clip of the red balloon.
  • this is a real life horror story as there are no futuristic species involved.
  • it suggests someone escaped from prison, when the teenager was flicking through the tv channels and this links to the man hiding upstairs.
Romantic comedy:
INNER form -
  • A man and woman fall in love.
  • There is always a happy ending.
  • There is a dilemma- an issue.
  • usually the main characters have side kicks.
OUTER form -
  • Locations- airport, work, beach and train station.
  • public transport is typical used in the dilemma to exaggerate the storyline.
  • the main roles of the relationship are usually attracted.
  • either is a high school/ college relationship or middle age relationship.
The last genre I am going to research is "Romantic Comedy" and I watched a short film called "signs".
INNER form -
  • Is about a young man who moved to the city with a good office job.
  • but he moved away from his friends so he has no social life.
  • lonely/awkward
  • Has the same daily routine.
  • stares at woman on public transport but never gets approached.
  • comedy sections- falling off chair, looking at the signs for ages, drawing funny faces and posing in the mirror.
  • starts with sad music then as he mets her it gets happier. When the dilemma starts the music gets faster and more dramatic.
OUTER form -
  • no bright colours used e.g. grey, white and black
  • basic apartment - microwaved meal for one.
  • public transport helps show his emotions.
  • near the end he drinks a lemonade which the woman was drinking on the day he saw her.
dramatic/ happy ending:
  • Goes into work to see she is not in the office. The next day she shines a light on his face and is a level above as she got a promotion. This encourages them to meet up. He asks her and she says yes and he runs out of his job and out to the busy public to meet in person for the first time.
What is my favourite film genre and why?
My favourite genre is comedy as I like to relax when watching a film and enjoy it. I like it because its entertaining and i can watch comedies with friends and family. There isn't a complicated storyline so it can be for all ages. It makes me happy and positive.I don't find horror films enjoyable as I don't like being scared and feel out of my comfort zone. This is also similar to sad/weepy films as I feel I am an upbeat person and don't like to feel sad and wouldn't choose that kind of film.

INNER form of a comedy:
  • storyline- emphasis on the humour and designed to entertain.
  • Usually exaggerates real life for a laughter purpose.
  • has a happy ending
  • involves- pratical joke and taking the mick out of each other.
  • Typical characters- boring, crazy, funny and up for anything: a good example is "Inbetweeners".
  • different sub genres- slapstick, silent, action and horror comedy films.
OUTER form -
  • setting can be anywhere e.g. going on holiday.
  • props can include anything to make an audience laugh.
