History of Cinema

The institution of Film is the understanding of codes and how a genre operates.
IMR stands for Institutional Mode of Representation:
(Dominant way of film construction)
  • Is the style of films that are developed during the 'classic' era of Hollywood Cinema.
  • France started the film cinema industry not the USA.
'Primitive style' is the movie making in the 'classic era' of Hollywood'.
  • This style is frontal staging.
  • There is hardly any camera movement.
The first film was made in 1895 by the 'Lumiere Brothers films' and filmed in black and white. Even though they filmed people walking in and out of work and town, there was some cips which showed the first comedy sketches. Early cinema was all silent films, unsophicated and sometimes a melodramatic mime.
  • 'La Voyage dans la Lune' (a trip to the moon) was one of the first films to use special effects and a big set.
  • It was made in 1902 by George Méliès.
  • D W Griffiths made a film called 'Birth of a Nation' in 1915:
  • He was the first director to change the length of the shot to show emotions and dramatic scene cuts.
  • He edited it, to create lengthy, dramatic narrative with subtitles and used panning.
  •  However he was being racist as they painted themselves black (fake black people).
  • He was the first man to make a film more modern.

  • Al Jolson made the 'The Jazz Singer' in 1927, which was the first film with sound.
  • Jolson was inspirational to black people as he liked there style of singing.
  • Therefore they were allowed jobs in singing and acting because of him.
IMR Element- believe in...
  • Invisible camera and editing technique.
  • Physiological realism.
  • Linear Narrative.
  • Continuity editing.
  • Codes of sound and image.
Korean films are not in the English language but are still internationally known because there sound, camerawork and editing is easy to understand e.g. 'A tale of two sisters'.
